Our expert advice for planning your trip

The best time to visit New Zealand is during the spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) when the weather is generally mild and the landscapes are beautiful.

Visit the stunning landscapes of Fiordland National Park and discover Milford Sound, explore the rolling hills of the South Island on a hike, relax in the hot springs of Rotorua, tour the vineyards of Marlborough, learn about Maori culture in Rotorua or the Northland, and enjoy the vibrant cities of Wellington and Auckland.

    • Transportation Public transport is limited outside major cities. Renting a car is recommended for exploring natural landscapes. Drive on the left, roads can be narrow and winding but well-maintained.
    • Language English is the main language, but Maori is also recognized. Learning a few Maori words ("Kia ora" means hello) is appreciated.
    • Alcohol regulations Alcohol is sold in supermarkets, but spirits are available in special stores. Legal drinking age is 18.
    • Payment by card Card payments are widely accepted, even for small amounts. Withdrawing cash is possible but not often necessary.

    • Weather-resistant outdoor clothing, rain cover for backpack
    • Hiking boots and daypack
    • Mosquitoes, insect repellent and sunscreen
    • Power bank and adapter
    • Credit card
